ALEX SHER | REFLECTIONS

“I grabbed my camera and jumped in the water again, as usual…however, this time, instead of photographing models, I started looking up – at the other side mirror. The things I saw were definitely not what I expected to see.
Let’s say it was a very different reflection because the water surface was moving. This movement brings out features we are missing in regular mirrors. It was not
a reflection; it was an opinion.”

– Alex Sher.

Private Pool. 2018
One day when I was in the pool, instead of photographing models, I took pictures of their reflections on the other side of the water's surface. As the water surface, we normally see, the other side is also a mirror - A very different one with floating reflections, holes full of trees standing by the pool, the skies, and sometimes people. These reflections and holes are constantly shifting, opening, and disappearing. You can't predict what you will see next. Nothing remains of that moment, except for the photo you took.

‘THE OTHER SIDE’ OF UNDERWATER FIGURE PHOTOGRAPHY BY
ALEX SHER | REFLECTIONS

‘REFLECTIONS’ is a series of underwater photographs showing the beauty of women’s figures through colors, lines, shapes created by reflections on a water surface. It is not quite figurative photography because the heroines in the photographs are not real. And the distortion that water adds creates completely abstract pictures, sometimes reminiscent of the works of Chagall or Picasso, sometimes – a very realistic stroke of a brush. Another side of underwater figure photography is another side of reality, another way to look at things, a different opinion.

Neighbor's Wife. 2020
The other side of the water surface is a mirror with a mind of its own. This picture is the other side reflection of a professional model who let me take and publish it. It looks like the model has never discussed the model release with her underwater reflection. The reflection seems to object. I had to stop the shooting from letting them talk it over.
And then the neighbor's wife came out for a smoke with this look on her face.

There are no rules in photography. Today's exception will become a rule tomorrow. I was sure the new girl would need practice and practice - and missed. She was just perfect from the first second till the last dive, and then she got married and moved out of California. I now have 21 great pictures from a single session with a girl who was not a model neither a diver. I guess she was a mermaid.

“Sher’s photography is the finest expression of femininity I have ever met, a sensual poetry of dark abyss transforming light into an endless game of fragility and strength.”

“Once upon a time, when wheels were made of stone and phones had no cameras, lived my grandma. I loved my grandma and loved her stories about people and places she remembered. There was one story about a photographer which grandma was telling in the photo lab, waiting for the pictures to develop. Grandma never mentioned his name – just a guy who was a magician. He could make any woman beautiful with his camera.
I envied him. I wanted to be this guy. I wished my grandma would say that about me someday. This photographer knew some magical secrets, and he took these secrets with him to the Holocaust grave.
Many years have passed. I’ve traveled all around the world, changing jobs and cameras, taking pictures of the most beautiful people, and doing unbelievable things. And through my life journey, I still hope to hear someday: “He is a magician; he makes life beautiful with his camera.”

Porcelain. 2017
Porcelain - aside from being an exquisite material - is the name of my project. The premise of the project: My best underwater photos in a porcelain color scheme on a black background - nude, no face, no second pictures for the same model. This project started in 2017. I am very picky here. This is obviously the first photo - not the last one. This photo has been featured this year in Model Society Academy Magazine (US), Contemporary Art Curator Magazine (US), Moevir (France), and The Style Researcher (Italy)
