MARINA KORYAKIN | GYPSIES IN TRANSYLVANIA
In October 2017, it was my first visit to Transylvania, Romania.
I must say that all my life I lived in a big city, and the countryside was not so familiar to me—that is why I decided to make a series about Gypsies in Transylvania.
The feelings from my encounter with Gypsies were not unambiguous. They have a completely different way of life.
Sometimes they were friendly and kind and sometimes annoying and unwelcome, even violence and most of the time ask for gifts and money. It was the life of others.
The Gypsies live in isolated villages and usually not mixing with another community. They are bout 2.5% of Romania’s population. Mostly they deal with growing vegetables and household livestock, most of them are poor.
I’m an emerging photographer; in 2015, I bought my first camera, and immediately I was attracted to street photography, and along the way, I started to document exciting subjects.
I’m a mother of 2 adult sons and work in the medical field. I born in Ukraine and live in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Ever since I remember, I have always been fascinated by people. While watching them, I try to imagine what sort of lives they live, what their thoughts are, and what their dreams are.
I try to photograph what I feel and not merely what I see.
