Hidden Dimensions
By Jens Vange
“This body of work interprets urban buildings through reflections in their neighbors. The abstractions reveal fleeting, unintended architecture that passersby often miss. These hidden dimensions give viewers pause to decipher what they see, puzzle how the image was captured, and perhaps ignite a deeper curiosity of their surroundings. All photos are single exposure”.

Jens received his first camera from his father in his early teens, a Kodak Pocket Instamatic.
He spent the next three decades expanding his gear and building on his father’s inspiration to capture the essence of a place. As an architect, Jens honed his aesthetic sensibilities, particularly drawn to the magic of light, which eventually sparked his fascination with reflections. Jens continues to seek out the hidden dimensions of urban architecture and occasionally returns to the immediacy and stealth of his pocket camera: an iPhone. His primary camera is
a Sony A7iii.

“Magritte, Escher, Monet, and Dali have long captivated my imagination; how they translated the edges of reality into the fantastic. Since my first photographs as a child, light has fascinated me. As an architect, I have studied the properties of light and air to help me find the fleeting layers of reflections and the unexpected distortions of forms and edges in urban settings. Travel opportunities to explore international cities have allowed me to seek out their hidden dimensions reflected in glass, stone, and water.
Rather than photograph buildings directly, I interpret them through their neighbors, revealing moments of unintended architecture. These experiences now tease my periphery in every city I visit, especially my own, Minneapolis, inspiring me, and I hope others, to look beyond the familiar and uncover, or rediscover, the fantastic.” – Jens Vange
