In the Countryside” is a photographic exploration that documents rural life beyond the postcard idyll and the hustle and bustle of industrial life. Through minimalist black-and-white photographs, the project captures the subtle nuances of a landscape that is often noticed only in passing.

At the heart of this work lies simplicity and unpretentiousness. While the city thrives on its intense density and constant change, the countryside here retains an unassuming, down-to-earth quality and restraint. The images do not seek the monumental, but rather the small:

– The texture of a weathered fence post.
– The geometry of high-voltage pylons cutting across the horizon.
– Paths and trails that seem to lead nowhere.

A key feature of the project is the absence of people. Although the human touch is evident in every building, every path, and every electricity pylon, the scene remains deserted. This emptiness creates space for an underlying sense of melancholy, in which the onset of decay also becomes apparent – things are not ‘spruced up’ for the camera, but shown in their natural state of ageing.

The reduction to black and white emphasizes the graphic qualities of the rural landscape. Light and shadow give form to the vast meadows and solitary trees.

– Architecture & Details: Barns, fences, and power lines are transformed into abstract forms.

– Nature & Life: Whilst people are absent, farm animals appear only sporadically as silent extras, emphasizing the slower pace of the surroundings.

– Minimalism: Through deliberate composition, the pace of everyday life is slowed down. The eye lingers on details often overlooked in the rhythm of modern life.

“In the Countryside” is a tribute to the slow pace of life and the beauty of imperfection. It is an invitation to sharpen one’s eye for the seemingly insignificant.

Ralf Dreier

Ralf Dreier began his photographic journey in the 1970s, initially with his father’s camera. This playful approach later turned into a personal passion when Dreier discovered photography as a serious form of artistic expression in the late 1990s. He was attracted to black-and-white photography early on: he worked with analog 35mm and medium-format systems and developed and enlarged his films independently in the darkroom.

A turning point came at the end of 2006, when Dreier switched to digital technology. He remained faithful to black-and-white photography, but the possibilities of digital photography enabled him to explore new ways of creating images. In recent years, his focus has increasingly shifted towards minimalist black-and-white photography, with a clear emphasis on architecture and landscape. His work is characterized by a reduced visual language, strong structures, and careful, sharply contoured lines
