We need help to rise above our own humanity and understand mortality. So we invent angels as more than humans who are messengers of the beyond, the afterlife. In aboriginal traditions, this would be akin to nature spirits symbolized by birds and other animals. We ask ourselves the question if we are to die, why are we born in the first place. We look to find meaning in our existence on earth. We want to believe that there is more to this world than just the material.
To see an angel in the other is to love them. Even the evilest people have a light inside them, albeit some very tiny that says there is more to us than just this skin and bones. I believe something lasts after our bodies become corpses, you are only to look at a dead body to know there is no one left there. Maybe our bodies are just temporary suits of clothing for who we really are and of course no one really knows what that is. I certainly don’t, but do hope that there is something greater than myself and more buddha-like. There are many theories and different traditions, but in the end, we all have the same thing in common, longing for immortality, beyond our daily grind. We want an experience of mystery or mystical. And so we have angels, humans with wings that allow us to remember we are not just flies but also buddhas.
Eva Lewarne is a painter, photographer, designer, and poet. She studied Fine Art at OCAD (Ontario College of Art) and English Literature. Her work has been shown at the Salon Grand Palais in Paris, the Chapelle de la Sorbonne, Jadite Gallery In New York, Gallery Moos, and Bezpala-Brown Gallery in Canada, amongst others.
Lewarne’s work can be found in public and private collections in Canada, the U.S. France, and Germany, and her work has been featured in many international publications. Her photograph, Dreamweaver 5″ was accepted into SNAP 2014 juried exhibition, and her work “Peek-A-Boo” won Best Portrait in SNAP 2015 juried exhibition.
Lewarne was also awarded internationally at the Gala Awards in Barcelona and the 5th Biennial of Fine Art & Documentary Photography 2018. She exhibited her photography work in Gallery 44, Toronto; In New York, EliSabeth Bancroft Wessel Meindl curated a juried show. Also, at Perfect Exposure Gallery, California, and her work has been presented in Toronto in Gallery 1313, 2018.
