Expression of Devotion
By Ora Buerkli
When I started focusing on street and documentary photography, this fascination found its way into my work, at first without me consciously noticing. What interests me is the visual aspect of these moments, coupled with the emotions they reveal, such as hope, grief, gratitude, and joy. While the symbols and rituals differ from one faith to another, the intent and the gestures feel remarkably similar.
Religion often divides; we often fail to recognize the commonalities. Beneath the differences lies a shared search for meaning and comfort. As a body of work, these images offer glimpses of humanity at its most open, vulnerable, and hopeful.
Over the years, I have photographed such moments in places of worship, at pilgrimage sites, during religious festivals, and simply on the street. Again and again, I found myself drawn to the gestures themselves — hands raised in prayer, heads bowed, candles lit, offerings made. These quiet acts often say more than words.

“ Photography has given me a way to connect with people across cultures and communities while encouraging me to slow down and observe more closely.
My camera often serves as a bridge, opening the door to unexpected moments of openness and trust.
I am particularly drawn to themes of identity, faith, and community, and to the ways these are expressed in everyday life.Working primarily in the street, I seek moments that reveal both the uniqueness of individual experience and the common threads that connect us.”
