I think too much. I am full of questions and deliberation, which often draws me artistically to deep Believers (except proselytizers who force their own beliefs on others, unable to abide by cultural diversity). Shamans, monastics, pilgrims, healers, and ascetics…the faithful captivates and inspire me and are frequently the subjects I photograph as I travel abroad.

My images are a reaction to global cultural homogenization. In retaliation against uniformity, I use my camera to interact with, celebrate and share The Different. My art reflects my philosophy of Photographer as Maker, not Taker, a Seeker over a Hunter. Years ago, prowling stealthily with my camera like a poacher in the hope of a kill, I often returned home with busy pictures and only the vaguest of travel recollections.

These days I wander with less intent but keener purpose: to experience the essence of a place and to connect with it: shared meaningful interaction with people, and slowing down to clearly see—really notice—and feel where I am, who I am, at that spot and at that moment. This is true of my ‘people in place’ work as well as my approach to landscape/nature. Places and things can be sacred, too, and I approach them with the same reverential astonishment, turning to my camera as a way to discover answers.

Much like a writer frequently does not know what he thinks or feels before putting pen to paper, I reach for my camera to understand and form ideas regarding my travels and experiences. What does this place mean to me? Who am I, here? Why am I here? What do I hope to remember, forever, about these people, this unique place?

I am passionate about cultural diversity and environmental preservation. Having lived in several countries and traveled extensively, I now make my base camp in Vancouver. I love cats, campfires, and cheese; I do not love that #travelphotography has been hijacked by what amounts to #lookatmeonmyluxuryvacation.
